Too busy reading (and not writing)

Posted by kathryn - April 12th, 2006

I went back to the same bookstore last Friday and found a couple more books.  This time paperbacks of Gene Tierney’s & Jane Russells autobiographies.  I’m now on Jane Russell’s book which I saved until last.

I’ve also watched season 3 of Full House and I’m watching season 3 of Bewitched now.  I definitely enjoyed this season of Full House more than the previous 2 seasons… and I’m only up to about episode 4 of Bewitched so it’s too early to comment. However watching episodes filmed in colour as opposed to colourised makes a big difference.

But back to the books.

All of the books were autobiographies and well out of print.  And with the exception of Jane Russell…. all have passed on.

Lana Turner wrote a lot about her jewellry, she’d tell a story and slip in exactly what diamonds she was wearing too.  I got the feeling that her story was a bit toned down, almost like it got the once-over by the MGM publicity machine.  It was interesting to read about her many marriages and the scandalous death of Johnny Stompanato - stabbed by her daughter Cheryl.

Ginger Rogers was frank about her marriages, her movies with Fred and life in Hollywood.  She wrote of her devotion to her mother and the men that she married.  Naturally she wrote about several miracles that occurred thanks to her life-long belief in Christian Science too.

Gene Tierney really did have a sad life. From her strained family (where her father stole her money) to her strained marriage, and eventually her mental health issues.  I don’t think she ever got over the guilt of her daughter Daria being mentally retarded…..

I’m definitely going to keep an eye out for more books.  They really do turn up when you don’t expect them!
