Do musicals always have to be based on something?
I have probably the most creative mind in the world, but I want to write a musicals. Yet I feel that it has to be based on something. Does it have to be based on something in order to have songs?
Think about it:
Spring Awakening was based on an old play
Rent was based on la Boheme.
Cats was based on a t.s eliot book
The only musicals I know of that are SUPPOSEDLY not based on something except a certain era/scene/fad was Bells are Ringing and Grease.
