Something from a Rogers and Hammerstein musical might do. Their songs are fairly simple :
In My Own Little Corner – Cinderella
A Lovely Night – Cinderella
I Enjoy Being a Girl – Flower Drum Song
My Favorite Things – The Sound of Music
Getting to Know You – The King and I
Hello, Young Lovers – The King and I
What is a good song to sing is of no consequence; you wouldn’t be able to sing it if you can’t sing, so best to work backstage, or be in the chorus, where it won’t matter.
Whats your range? I would audition. Even if you don’t make it, you haven’t lost anything and auditioning is good experience. If you’re a soprano "16 going on 17" from the sound of music would be good.
an alto-strongest suit from aida, or all that jazz from chicago would work. strongest suit is harder than all that jazz, but makes a good audition piece.
i dont know about tenor or bass. but do try out, you never know you may get a part, and directors are usually more likely to put you on crew if you try out. just remember, theatre is all about the big picture, so dont feel bad if youre not on stage. i’ve seen shows that would have been great if it hadn’t been for poorly done lighting or someone messing up sound cues. so try out, do your best and have fun. good luck.
