There are truckloads of excellent reference books on musicals (a number by Ken Bloom) that will tell you the history, what everyone does (director, producer, sound, lighting, etc.), and all that. Besides the websites others have noted, check out the Internet Broadway Database (www.ibdb.com), which is huge and full of history. If you want a topic, try "Sondheim vs Webber" or "Pulitzer Prize Musicals".
St. Mathews Passion…JS Bach, Don Giovanni, Mozart.
go to your local theatre and see a director they’ll be happy to help you, or go see a highschool drama teacher and ask for help…or go to historyofmusicals.com
ok 2 musicals i would suggest are The Phantom of the Opera and Cats
I’d do 2 by Sondheim because of the social/political/ethical dilemmas presented.
Sweeney Todd is a political/ethical/social commentary that is extremely complex in all of its rich layers. You could compare it/contrast it to another of his musicals like Assassins which also has a strong political/ethical/social commentary. Since all characters are bent on assassination(s) I think it would a fascinating project. You don’t really narrow down what ‘project’ is so this is the best I can do for now. Best to you.
Well, I would make a poster/diarama kind of thing with lots of pictures and descriptions underneath. I would also pick some of the most memorable musicals, or foreign ones.
You can check out http://www.tonyawards.com for some musicals.
For other musicals, I’d check out http://theatre-musical.com
When you find the musicals you’d lik to do, go to http://www.wikipedia.org for information on them (Wiki’s pretty accurate with musicals)
You could also talk about the musicals that have been turned into movies, such as Rent, Hairspray (coming out soon), The King and I, Annie, A Chorus Line, and many more.
Another project you could do is a poster/diarama about Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musicals. His creations include Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Aspects of Love, Evita, and more. This is the one I’d surely love to do!
Fior info on ALL of his creations, go to http://www.reallyuseful.com
Good luck with your project! I sure wish my teachers would let me do this kind of thing.
