FELA! Musical (off Broadway)

FELA! is a new musical that is directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones with a book by Jim Lewis, in which audiences are welcomed into the extravagant, decadent and rebellious world of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti. Using his pioneering music (a blend of jazz, funk and African rhythm and harmonies), FELA! explores Kuti’s controversial life as artist, political activist and revolutionary musician. Featuring many of Fela Kuti’s most captivating songs and Bill T. Jones’ imaginative staging, this new show is a provocative hybrid of concert, dance and musical theater.

This is a rarely, if ever, seen clip from the Broadway musical Applause, of Tony Award winning star Lauren Bacall singing “But Alive,” which takes place in a Greenwich Village New York gay bar. It’s very 70s, and truly a classic. Just seeing Bacall play the gay diva and sing and get flipped and flung around by the guys is worth the price alone. The quality of the video is okay, but I got it from someone who copied me a video of the entire show, which had been filmed for TV two years after it opened on Broadway. That special only aired once on network TV and has never been seen again. This is just pure fun, especially if you love stuff like this.

Wicked The Musical Documentary Part 2

All Rights Reserved to Universal Studios BROADWAY: THE AMERICAN MUSICAL DOCUMENTARY The documentary about Broadway musicals! Wicked is a Tony Award-winning Broadway and West End musical, with songs and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman. The story is based on the best-selling novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, a parallel novel of L. Frank Baum’s classic story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz. Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West and her relationship with Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. (In the album notes, Gregory Maguire explained that he derived the name “Elphaba” from the initials of L. Frank Baum.) Their friendship struggles through their opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, their reactions to the Wizard’s corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba’s public fall from grace. The plot is set mostly before Dorothy’s arrival from Kansas, and includes several references to well-known scenes and dialogue in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz as a backstory. The musical debuted on Broadway on October 30, 2003. It was produced by Universal Pictures and directed by Joe Mantello, with musical staging by Wayne Cilento. Its original stars were Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, and Joel Grey as the Wizard.[1] Although the production received mixed reviews and was panned

This is one song from my new musical, “Pirate Tenaya & her Gay Crew – the Musical” by Tenaya Hurst. As with all my cabarets and musicals, I take popular songs from musicals and…pop music, and change the lyrics to tell my story. In this case, I have chosen the song Popular to parody. This song comes at the time of the show when I have brought a Stow Away pirate, soon to be known as the Revenge Pirate, into my Captain’s Quarters. In this song, I explain to her how I will make her a pirate of love, just like me.
