Why aren't movie musicals popular anymore?

There have been some really good musical movies out recently: Chicago, Rent, The Producers. And yet, only Chicago was modestly successful. Musicals used to be the movie studios bread and butter, now you’re lucky if you can get enough money to videotape a high school production (okay, I’m exaggerting, but still…) The few that do come out aren’t popular. Why is that?
I guess my real question is: Why can’t people suspend disbelief to enjoy musicals? Here’s a link to my blog post on the subject; that should help explain it a little more.
Woops! Forgot the link. Here it is: http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-gSmhHxkwd6IhwNkHBKpfkw–?cq=1&p=11

Alright, my fiance wants to rent out a theatre/playhouse to perform the first run of a new musical comedy he has written. He wants to produce the whole thing basically as he has written the script, music etc. He found a place that he can rent for a decent rate. We will make all the sets ourselves and he hopes to produce cds he can sell, print broshures, etc.
This is a for a first run new musical never produced before.

Any playwrights / producers out there that can give pointers on things we should look out for? Things we may be not thinking about? Advice?

How do you get a new musical into a theater?

I am currently working on a new original musical with a couple of friends. It’s a serious piece of work rather than a spoof. (And just for reference – it’s nothing like HSM. We can’t stand HSM). We believe that it has potential as a professionally performed piece, but we are not entirely sure of how to go about it.
Does anyone have any tips or suggestions? We have connections to a couple of producers, but we’re not sure if we need to speak to them first or find a theater first.
Thanks.

In recent years, we have seen many broadway musicals made into films…Rent, Hairspray, Chicago, Mamma Mia, the Producers.

Which other musicals would you like to see a screen adaptation, and who should play the leading roles?
